Google launches Gemini for Kids: an educational AI for children

In a world where digital technologies are gradually permeating every aspect of daily life, including education, artificial intelligence is emerging as a tool with vast potential. Recently, Google announced the launch of Gemini for Kids, a version of its general-purpose AI model designed specifically for children. This initiative raises many questions: What exactly does this tool entail? What are its objectives? And what safeguards does it offer in terms of data protection and ethics?

The reasons behind the development of AI for children

Today’s children grow up in an environment saturated with digital content. According to a 2023 study by Common Sense Media, children aged 8 to 12 spend an average of 5 hours a day in front of a screen, a figure that continues to rise1. This observation is prompting technology companies to offer tailored solutions capable of guiding this screen time while contributing to the cognitive and creative development of young children.

It is against this backdrop that Google developed Gemini for Kids, an educational AI designed to:

  • Support learning in an interactive and personalized way.
  • Foster creativity and intellectual curiosity through content tailored to the user's age.
  • Enhance children's online safety through filtering and parental control tools.

By creating a safe and educational digital environment, this initiative aims to address the growing need for technological tools designed specifically for minors2.

Features and How Gemini for Kids Works

Based on the Gemini model, this version for children includes several features tailored to the needs and cognitive abilities of young children:

  • Contextualized and simplified answers tailored to the user’s age, using accessible vocabulary and visual explanations.
  • Fun and interactive modules, including educational quizzes and learning games designed to reinforce learning through play.
  • An advanced parental control system that allows you to set permitted content categories, usage limits, and view activity reports.
  • An automated content filter designed to block sensitive or inappropriate content.

In addition, Google has clarified that children’s personal data will not be used for advertising purposes and that no chat history will be retained by default. This approach is in line with the recommendations issued by bodies such as the Council of Europe and the CNIL, which advocate for specific regulations governing the collection of data concerning minors².

Educational benefits and limitations of this type of system

The benefits of Gemini for Kids can be viewed from several perspectives. In particular, AI could:

  •  To make it easier to learn languages and scientific concepts.
  •  Help children with their homework and research projects.
  •  Encourage their creativity through age-appropriate activities.
  •  Help raise awareness about responsible digital use.

However, several limitations are worth noting. One of the main ones concerns screen time. Research published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2022 indicates that excessive screen use among children is linked to attention problems and difficulties with emotional regulation. It is therefore essential to strictly limit children’s exposure to these technologies.

On the other hand, the question of whether AI can replace human interaction remains open. No matter how advanced it may be, AI cannot replace the interactions between children and adults in the processes of learning and socialization.

Finally, despite Google’s stated commitments, the challenges surrounding the protection of minors’ personal data require heightened vigilance. The European Parliament’s recent adoption of the AI Act (March 2025), which imposes stricter obligations on systems designed for children, underscores the importance of a strict legal framework for these technologies4.

Toward Necessary Regulation of Artificial Intelligence for Minors

The launch of Gemini for Kids comes amid growing regulation of AI in Europe and internationally. The European Commission, as part of its work on the AI Act, plans to classify certain uses targeting children as high-risk, with specific requirements regarding transparency, safety, and respect for fundamental rights.

These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure the ethical use of artificial intelligence, particularly when it comes to the most vulnerable groups. The development of AI-based educational solutions raises critical social, educational, and legal issues that developers, institutions, and families will need to anticipate and address.

What will be the future balance for educational AI designed for children?

The launch of Gemini for Kids reflects the rapid advancements in the artificial intelligence sector and its growing presence in educational settings. While this initiative offers promising opportunities to support children’s learning in a safe and personalized environment, it also raises fundamental questions: What limits should be set on these applications? How can we preserve the central role of human interaction? What safeguards should be provided to ensure the protection of minors’ rights in the digital environment?

These questions call for a collective and interdisciplinary approach, bringing together researchers, educators, parents, and policymakers. Constant vigilance will be essential to ensure that artificial intelligence used for children’s benefit remains a tool for empowerment and protection, rather than a source of dependence or control.
